What is a fast sand filter?

A fast sand filter is a water treatment device that uses sand or other granular media to filter out solid particles suspended in water. These suspended solids include dirt and other organic matter that cause water to appear cloudy or cloudy. Quick sand filtration normally uses urban water treatment plants to clean the surface and groundwater designed for drinking water. It is also used to clean waste and industrial waste water containing biological contaminants before these waters are released into the environment. The total depth of the medium usually ranges from 2-6 feet (about 0.6-1.8 meters). In many systems, the coming water or influence enters, enters the top of the tank and flows down through the media. Departing water or waste water leaves through a drainage system called Underdain, which is under the bed bed of the filter. This tensioning process is the primary mechanism by which the solids are removed from the water. In addition, they are suspendoSolid solids adsorbed to the grain surface due to intermolecular attractive forces. Other physical, chemical and biological processes also increase the removal of solids during filtration.

The efficiency of the fast sand filter is highly dependent on the characteristics of the influence and granular medium. Important influential properties include concentration, types and hubs of the particles of suspended solids in water. The depth of the media bed and the harassment of particles, the size and shapes of the grain are also essential.

Smooth round grains close together and cz cz very small pores. More jagged grains can produce larger pores, but when walking are better when capturing solids. Typically, layers of different grains are used to use multiple removal mechanisms.

Over time, the media bed of a fast sand filter is clogged with accumulated solids. At this point, the filter is cleaned of the processm called reverse washes. The washed water is pumped up the bed to release solids and rinse them from the tank. Once the washing water is released, the granular medium settles back into its original layers and the filter is ready to reuse.
