What is a wave engine?

The

wave engine is an early attempt to use tidal power and turn it into useful forms of energy. These engines were common in California at the end of the 18th and at the beginning of the 20th century and can be considered as the forerunners of the more modern initiatives of tidal power. The engines of the first wave were developed without the intention of electricity production. The mechanical energy created by these engines was used to start pumps, mills and other devices. Specific technology used by each wool engine varied, although common practice was the use of wool or tidal movement to pump seawater into the tanks and then allowed it to flow back down and rotate different generators and other devices in this process. There were two predominant types of wave engines, the first of which depended somewhat on the natural landscape. These wave engines use tunnels and wells that were drilled into the cliffs.
