What is cholestyramine?

Cholestyramine is a prescription medicine that is primarily administered to reduce blood cholesterol. It is supplied as a powder that is dissolved in the liquid and is used orally. Medicines are resin that binds bile acid in the intestine and brings these acids from the body. The bile acids that are necessary for digestion are made of cholesterol, which is produced by the liver. If bile acids are exhausted from the intestines, more cholesterol must be converted into bile acids, thus depleting cholesterol from the bloodstream. Atherosclerosis may increase the risk of heart disease or stroke. Cholesterol is a necessary fat that works to allow nutrients to pass through the cell membrane. It is used during meals and produced by the liver. If blood cholesterol levels are increased, patients can be advice to accept a low cholesterol diet or start taking cholesterol drugs. These molecules, known as lipoproteins, are made either at low density or in the form with high density. LLow density IPoproteins transport cholesterol to the cell and they contribute to the accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries. Maintaining normal low density lipoproteins is generally considered to be important in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. Low -density lipoproteins are the target of cholestyramine.

cholestyramine causes binding to bile acid in the intestine and capture them to be secreted in the stool. This medicine does not enter the bloodstream and should not interact with other systemic drugs. Bile acids are made of cholesterol in the liver and are transported to Gall Bladder. They are stored in the bladder until they are needed for digestion.

When cholestyramine reaches the intestine, it binds to bile acids and removes them. This causes the liver to convert multiple lipoproteins with low density into bile acids to reduce the levels of lipoproteins with low density CIThey roculate in the bloodstream. Patients suffering from liver disease that lead to bile accumulation can also benefit from cholestyramine treatment.

cholestyramines comes as off-white powder in cases or canis. The recommended dose of powder must be dissolved in the liquid and used orally. Received liquids for mixing with cholestyramine are water, fruit juice or even soup. The side effects of the use of this drug include constipation and flatulence.
