What is Pithecellobium?
Pithecellobium is a genus of plants with trees and shrubs that all produce seed pods containing seeds and flesh fruits. The species occur mainly in the tropical areas of North and Central America and parts of Asia. Different types of pithecellobium are diverse and are often used for woodworking screens, natural privacy and food. Some species are more similar to shrubs and others are small or medium trees. Each species produces the module -shaped fruit and most of them have flowers in the shape of a powder in yellow or white. There is some confusion about this genus, because many species that have once been classified as pithecellobium have been re -declared in other families since then. Now more often referred to as ebenopsis ebano , Texas Ebony has brown pods and white puffy flowers seen on all Pithecellobium Plants. Texas Ebony is a large shrub, usually reaching 15-30 feet (4.5-9.1 m) high and equally wide. As the name suggests, it is primSee in Texas, although many of them can also be found in northern Mexico. This species has many thorns on its branches, so it works well as a natural fencing or privacy screen.
One of the most famous types of Pithecellobium is Pithecellobium dulce . Commonly called the Manila Tamarind tree, dulce is originally from Central America, but was intentionally grown in the Caribbean in Florida and Hawaii, where it is often considered weed. Manila Tamarind, which is a very resistant tree, is able to cope with temperatures above 100 & degf; (37.7 & DEGC;) and short drops under frost. Tolerant drought, Manila Tamarind can grow in most types of soil.
Another common kind of Pithecellobium is Pithecellobium Saman . It is also called a monkey-under or rain tree, it is natively in Central and South America, but has become the basis for Hawaii for use in carving and furniture, especially in tourist trade.
