What are the different types of administrative assistants?

Administrative assistants perform a wide range of secretary duties to facilitate the flow of organization and productivity in a professional or business environment, usually in an office environment. However, most administrative assistants require skills and level of professionalism that goes beyond the typical role of secretaries. As the name suggests, the primary duties of administrative assistants are largely related to the administrative aspect of the company or organization with the aim of helping employees of seniors and executive levels.

Most administrative assistant jobs still include a certain degree of tasks that are spiritual in nature, such as responding to phones, meeting settings, writing, submission, etc. They may also be required to invest and change office needs, and other records and other secular work. Many jobs of administrative assistants require knowledge and skills relevant to specialized areas. For example, some administrative assistants perform double duty such as executive secretaries, medical secretaries or legal assistants. The basic duties of operating the office remain the same, but these positions also include skills specific to this sector, such as data analysis, patient history, or designing legal documents. Other tasks of an administrative assistant that require specialization exist in real estate, insurance, research and development, government, educational and many other markets.

Generally speaking, there is no standard level of training or education outside a high school diploma that must become an administrative assistant. In fact, many people are preparing for a role by persevening with training in the workplace in different types of office settings and working for a certain period of time. However, professional certifications are available for administrative assistants, at least in the US, for example, the International Association of Administrative Experts offers the designations of a certified administrative professional (CAP). Other organizations provide training and certification relevant to certain professions, such as an accredited legal secretary (ALS) and a professional legal secretary (PLS) offered by the National Association of Legal Secretaries.
